British suave meets Italian flair with Aston Martin’s V12 Zagato racing car concept. If your car designs have been criticised for their similarity, you can always rely on the Italians to inject some new flair.

Aston Martin has teamed up with Zagato to unveil a stunning race-bred coupe that’s based on the Vantage V12 and celebrates a collaboration between the British sports car brand and Italian design house dating back 50 years.

The company says it will produce “a strictly limited run of road-going [versions]” of the V12 Zagato, which features a new handcrafted aluminium body that’s laid over the 12-cylinder Vantage’s mechanicals and platform.

Standout styling elements include Zagato’s signature double-bubble roof, while the muscular rear guards and prominent circular tail-lights are reminiscent of the Ferrari 599. The sharply designed, shallow glasshouse adds to the aggressive stance.

The Zagato features the same 6.0-litre V12 as the flagship Vantage model, so there’s 380kW and 570Nm sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automated manual. A stripped-out interior that includes a full roll-cage should ensure a lower kerb weight for slightly quicker performance.

The Zagato also gets a 120-litre fuel tank as it is to compete in endurance race events, starting with the Nurburgring 24-hour in June. Aston Martin has worked with Zagato on several iconic designs, including the 1961 DB4GT Zagato that started the collaboration, the V8 Vantage Zagato and the DB7 Zagato.

Dr Ulrich Bez, Aston’s CEO, says the Zagato design language “is a perfect complement to our design and engineering expertise”.

The production version of the Zagato is likely in 2012. The V12 Zagato was officially unveiled at the Villa D’Este Concours in Italy over the weekend, where it was fighting for attention against Ferrari’s one-off model, the $6.5m Superamerica 45.
