Nourth Sumatra named host for Museum Summit 2011

MEDAN – The Ministry of Tourism and Culture named North Sumatra the host for the National Museum Expert Summit, which is scheduled from May 2nd to May 5th, 2011.

Around 250 museum experts, historians, and archeologists – mostly Indonesians – will be invited, the Ministry’s Director General Aurora Tambunan said Monday.

“The summit is expected to boost local museums in Indonesia,” he said, citing data indicating that many are vulnerable to shutting down due to poor management.

“We have received suggestions to replace management from the regional government, in concerns with the lack of qualifications."

“The local museums should exhibit unique crafts originated from the region,” she added.

Acting Governor Gatot Pudjo Nugroho welcomed the summit and its initiatives to enhance tourism through museum reformation.

“This is a good step for promoting North Sumatra,” he said of the project, which is partly funded by the gubernatorial office.
