Police detain Deli Subandi, 14, for allegedly stealing a prepaid SIM card worth Rp 10,000(around US$1). Deli is facing a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
"The detainment has already followed the procedures," said Johor Baru Police Chief, Comm. Suyatno, on Tuesday.
The incident began as some local residents of Johar Baru were involved in a mob, which led to minor destruction. "[Deli] broke into a store which sells SIM cards," he said. "He escaped the scene when people started to shout at him."
The store owner then went to the police and reported the case.
Suyatno claimed police had afterwards picked up three suspects, including Deli. After a thorough investigation, two suspects but Deli were released.
According to the witnesses, said Suyatno, Deli busted the store up and took a SIM card worth Rp 10,000. "The boy admitted his doing," he said.
Suyatno denied a report saying that police have mistreated the suspect. "We're not setting up the case," he said.
