Indonesia still facing law enforcement transparency challenge

Makassar, S Sulawesi - Indonesia is at present still facing a serious challenge in regard to law enforcement transparency, Constitutional Court chairman Harifin A Tumpa said here on Thursday.

"In this modern era, especially since the reform era, transparency, including in law enforcement, is inevitable," Harifin said at the Hasanuddin University campus here.

According to him, law enforcement practices in Indonesia were not transparent enough and this had created lack of public trust on law enforcement institutions.

"Even in every legal process the law enforcers are not transparent. In every legal process they should have been transparent so that the justice seekers can be sure if the process goes according to procedures," he said.

Therefore he added that the law enforcement process should be in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure so that it could be delivered transparently to the seeker of justice.

Harifin said the law enforcers often used the law as a tool for creating legal impunity.

In spite of the fact that the law enforcement transparency was bad, Harifin said not all law enforcers should be blamed because it was as well inseparable from the role of the parties including the advocates in certain cases.
