Lexus's HSV-inspired Concept

Here is the new 'face' of Lexus. Toyota's luxury brand has lifted the covers off a new concept car that showcases a bolder design language for its future models, as well as previewing the next-generation GS sedan.

The LF-Gh concept, which makes its global debut at next week's New York motor show, features an aggressive-looking front end that looks like a cross between an HSV and an Audi A6.

Lexus says the large "spindle-shaped" grille will be a key styling feature on its future vehicles and contributes to improved aerodynamics.

The LF-Gh is longer, wider and lower than the current GS and its styling is an evolution of the company's 'L-finesse' design language first seen on the 2005 IS.

The concept's side profile, though, also bears a resemblance to another car, the BMW 5-Series - not only in terms of proportions but also the curvature between the glass and C-pillar that is known as the signature 'Hofmeister kick' on BMW models.

Playing prominence at the rear is an up-turned boot lip for aerodynamic effect and tail-lights that feature boomerang-shaped LEDs and are joined by a lighting strip that helps to emphasise a wide stance.

Blue Lexus badges front and rear are designed to indicate the luxury grand tourer's hybrid drivetrain, though no details are provided on performance or efficiency.

Priced from $126,800, the current Lexus GS450h is powered by a petrol-electric drivetrain comprising a 3.5-litre petrol V6 and an electric motor for a total output of 254kW of power and a combined fuel figure of 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres while emitting 186g/km of CO2.

Lexus has also only released two detail shots of the LF-Gh's interior, but says the concept carries four occupants and features a boot with sufficient space to carry luggage for extended trips. Expect the GS production car to be a five-seater.

'The design examines the possibility of balancing what are normally opposing qualities, such as style and functionality,' says the general manager of Lexus's design division, Kengo Matsumoto.

"Although only a concept, we hope the LF-Gh will resonate with our customers worldwide, and communicate our intention to once again advance ideas about the face of Lexus luxury in the years to come."
